SAINT-SAUVEUR-LE-VICOMTE

is in Normandy, in the Cotentin peninsula. When we lived in that part of the world, we often passed through on the way to and from Cherbourg and the cross-channel ferries. The village is built on a hill, from which the castle could dominate a river crossing. It's a workaday sort of place, but with a superb castle, a working abbey and a number of pretty corners. This house is built with stones of a rainbow of colours, doubtless collected from the river bed. It's one of the few pictures where I've felt obliged to draw every single stone. It's also the only one so far where I've given in to the temptation to use a ruler. Slatted blinds are not easy for ancient fingers.
