Beuvron en Auge

is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France.

It's a sweet little village in the Calvados area of Normandy, with a splendid market hall and a wealth of half-timbered houses. I took lots of photos there many years ago at a time when magazines demanded transparencies, most of which perished before I got round to scanning them. The three remaining can be found at

The word 'Auge' means 'trough'; this refers to the geology of the region, where the preponderance of clay and lack of local stone explains the large number of houses built of timber, wattle and daub, often with brick foundations.
