Mortemart

is one of the jewels of the Limousin. Before I became wedded to Normandy, this would have been my first choice as a place to live in France. The moated Château was the family home of Athénaïs de Rochechouart de Mortemart, better known by her title as Madame (la Marquise) de Montespan. She was the mistress of Louis XIV, by whom she had seven children. The building, as you see, does not seem to have benefitted much from the connection, but the Parish Church is a different story.
